Here’s an amazing paleo diet smoothie recipe for you to try. I call it the “give me an energy boost” smoothie, aka super smoothie, aka serious smoothie. The health benefits of smoothies might seem obvious but it really depends on what goes into your smoothie that determines how much nutrition you’ll get from it. Take a look below for a nutritional breakdown for this Paleo friendly smoothie.
What’s good about this Paleo diet smoothie recipe?
Not only do I love the taste of this smoothie, I love how it boosts my mood, immune system and gives me a natural energy lift. But why does it do this? It’s because of the vitamins and minerals found in the range of ingredients:
Grapefruit being our citrus element, contains vitamin C, it also is a great source of potassium and folate.
Vitamin C is an essential element to help the immune system, the more you have the better in my opinion. Potassium helps our hearts function well, including Potassium rich foods should be another essential part of our diet. You can find a much deeper breakdown of the benefits of Potassium here.
Kiwi and Pineapple are other amazing sources of vitamin C, but their also full of manganese. Manganese is vital for healthy bones and nerves. It can also help regulate the amount of sugar in our blood, an essential prevention of developing diabetes.
Coconut water is a Paleo diet favourite. Coconut water contains less sugar then most fruit juices, it’s a wonderful way to hydrate naturally and get your fill of nutrients such as, potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium and many more!
Here I am in China enjoying a freshly cut coconut, which was about ¥5 Yuan, or 5op! We’d just been shopping for birthday candles and needed something refreshing after walking for so long. We’d been recommended a market to pick up non tourist items, so off we went in search for candles. After forgetting the word for birthday we simply sang, “Happy Candles” to the locals. They laughed, a lot, but knew what we meant, and even gave us a 20% discount!
Back to the Paleo diet smoothie recipe, and why it’s a healthy choice!
The berries – blueberry and raspberry, contain antioxidants. Antioxidants help fight potential disease. Raspberries help our bodies release serotonin – the happy hormone! There have been suggestions made that a diet that is low in carbohydrates can improve levels of serotonin that the body produces. Adding raspberries to my Paleo diet smoothie recipe was therefore a given!
Ginger provides another great Vitamin C source but it’s also a perfect natural energy booster!
What about fibre?
Smoothies that are jam packed with fruit help you achieve your daily requirement of dietary fibre, there’s no doubt about that. The fibre contained in fruit help ensure cholesterol is low, helps curb digestion issues and helps with energy intake.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 Red grapefruit
- 3 or 4 Kiwis
- Handful of blueberries – can be frozen or fresh
- Handful of raspberries – can be frozen or fresh
- 1 Pineapple, or a can of pineapple in juice – not syrup.
- 300ml coconut water (1 can)
- 1 tsp minced ginger
The above makes 2 pints, perfect for 2 – 4 people.
You could also add some extra natural supplements like:
- Korean Ginseng – 4 tablets. Holland and Barrett sell tablets that can be swallowed or opened to have as a drink, perfect!
- 1 crushed effervescent vitamin C tablet
- 2 crushed vitamin B complex tablets
- 2 crushed green tea tablets, or a similar story as above. You can buy tablets that can be opened to drink in a tea.
Making this Paleo diet smoothie recipe
Peel the kiwi’s, pineapple and grapefruit. Place everything in a blender and press on/go/start/blend.
(if you’re adding the extra supplements, crush them and add to the blended smoothie now)
Push the mixture, in batches through a fine sieve. Sieving the Paleo diet smoothie will catch the pith from the grapefruit, the raspberry seeds, and the kiwi seeds. This takes the most time, but it’s worth it. I’ve actually taken to double sieving – I know, I’m a maverick! The second sieve just takes out anything the first might have missed and makes the smoothie extra, well, smooth.
Of course, if you like all of that in then no need to sieve. But be warned, my first ever batch I didn’t sieve and it was a task to drink.
Step 3: Your Paleo diet smoothie recipe is complete!
Hunt out some glasses, gather them, pour and drink!
Brava! Let me know how you feel after trying the smoothie!
